For years, researchers have searched for a simple biological marker that could help explain fibromyalgia. Now, a protein found in glial cells is attracting attention. A new 2026 study found higher levels of GFAP antibodies in some people with fibromyalgia, along with a trend toward higher circulating GFAP levels. Another Study Adds to the Glial Cell Story

The GFAP findings are also interesting alongside another 2026 study.

Researchers reported that serum from people with fibromyalgia increased GFAP labeling in satellite glial cells from several types of mouse sensory and autonomic ganglia. The findings suggested that factors present in fibromyalgia serum could activate these glial cells. That study does not prove the same process occurs in humans.
